FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Have a plumbing question? Hoppers Plumbing is here to help.

If you do not see the answer you are looking for below, call our office at (530) 906-3445 and our team will be happy to assist you.

Below are answers to common questions about plumbing repairs, water heaters, drain and sewer services, well systems, water treatment, leak prevention, and other household plumbing concerns. We serve Auburn and communities throughout Placer County, with additional service available in Nevada City.

About Hoppers Plumbing & Scheduling

Q: What areas does Hoppers Plumbing serve?

A: Hoppers Plumbing serves Auburn and communities throughout Placer County, including Meadow Vista, Colfax, Lincoln, Rocklin, Loomis, Newcastle, Granite Bay, Foresthill, Applegate, and Weimar. We also provide plumbing service in Nevada City. Call us to confirm availability for your property.

Q: Is Hoppers Plumbing licensed and insured?

A: Yes. Hoppers Plumbing is a licensed and insured California plumbing contractor holding both C-36 Plumbing and C-55 Water Conditioning classifications under license #872354. We provide residential and commercial plumbing, water treatment, well-system, and related water-system services.

Q: Do you offer free plumbing estimates?

A: We offer free written estimates when the proposed work can be priced from a visual inspection of accessible conditions. Troubleshooting, testing, or diagnostic work may require a service charge. We explain any diagnostic fee before beginning and provide repair or replacement options after evaluating the problem.

Q: What is the difference between a service call and a free estimate?

A: A free estimate is generally used for planned work such as replacements, installations, or upgrades that can be priced from visible conditions. A service call is appropriate when troubleshooting or testing is required to identify the cause of a problem before the necessary repair and final price can be determined.

Q: Does Hoppers Plumbing warranty its work?

A: Hoppers Plumbing provides a one-year limited workmanship warranty on applicable work we perform. Customer-provided products remain covered by their manufacturer rather than Hoppers Plumbing, although our installation workmanship is still covered. Additional limitations are outlined in our Terms and Conditions.

Q: Can Hoppers Plumbing install fixtures or equipment that I purchase myself?

A: Yes. We can install many customer-provided faucets, toilets, plumbing fixtures, appliances, and selected plumbing equipment when they are appropriate for the application. Product defects and manufacturer warranty issues remain the customer's responsibility, while our installation workmanship carries our applicable warranty.

Plumbing Repairs, Leaks & Drains

Q: What should I do if I discover a plumbing leak?

A: If it is safe to do so, shut off the affected fixture or the home's main water supply to limit additional damage. Avoid forcing a valve that will not move and stay clear of water near electrical equipment. Contact Hoppers Plumbing and tell us where the leak is located and whether the water has been shut off.

Q: Why has my water bill suddenly increased?

A: An unexpected increase in water use can be caused by a running toilet, dripping fixture, underground water-line leak, or another hidden plumbing problem. If your normal water habits have not changed, Hoppers Plumbing can investigate the plumbing system, identify likely sources of water loss, and recommend the appropriate repair.

Q: What can cause low water pressure throughout my home?

A: Low pressure throughout a home can be caused by a failing pressure regulator, partially closed valve, restricted piping, hidden leak, or problems with well pressure equipment. If only one fixture is affected, the problem may be more localized. We evaluate where the pressure loss occurs before recommending repairs.

Q: Why do my drains keep clogging after they have been cleared?

A: Recurring drain problems can be caused by buildup, damaged piping, improper drainage, roots, or a restriction farther down the drain or sewer line. Repeatedly clearing the same blockage may not correct the underlying problem. We can evaluate the drain system and recommend repair or replacement when needed.

Q: When should I consider replacing old plumbing instead of repairing it?

A: Repeated leaks, corrosion, poor water pressure, aging materials, and frequent repairs can indicate that replacing part or all of the piping may be more practical than continuing individual repairs. Hoppers Plumbing can evaluate the accessible plumbing and explain whether a localized repair or repiping project makes more sense.

Q: Why does my toilet keep running or flushing poorly?

A: A running or unreliable toilet may have a worn flapper, faulty fill valve, damaged flush components, incorrect tank water level, or another internal problem. Many toilet issues can be repaired without replacing the fixture. We inspect the toilet and recommend repair or replacement based on its condition and age.

Water Heaters & Water Treatment

Q: How do I know whether my water heater should be repaired or replaced?

A: The decision depends on the heater's age, condition, type of failure, repair history, and overall installation. A minor component problem may justify repair, while a leaking tank or aging unit with repeated problems may make replacement more practical. We inspect the system and explain the available options.

Q: Is a tankless water heater a good choice for my home?

A: Tankless water heaters can provide continuous hot water and save space, but the home must have adequate gas or electrical capacity, venting, water flow, and installation space. We evaluate the existing utilities and hot-water demand before recommending whether a tankless system is a practical upgrade for the property.

Q: Why is my water heater making popping or rumbling noises?

A: Popping or rumbling sounds from a tank-style water heater can be associated with sediment or mineral buildup inside the tank, although other conditions can also cause noise. The correct solution depends on the heater's age and condition. We can inspect the unit and recommend maintenance, repair, or replacement.

Q: What is the difference between a water softener and a water filtration system?

A: A water softener primarily reduces hardness minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Filtration systems are designed to address other water-quality concerns depending on the filter or treatment media used. Water testing and your specific concerns help determine which type of treatment system is appropriate for your home.

Q: Can Hoppers Plumbing install reverse osmosis drinking water systems?

A: Yes. We install under-sink reverse osmosis systems for drinking water, including selected Hoppers-provided and customer-provided equipment. Installation may include connecting the system to the cold-water supply, drain, drinking-water faucet, and refrigerator line when accessible and included in the approved scope.

Q: How do I know what type of water treatment system I need?

A: The right water treatment system depends on the actual water condition and what you want to improve. Hardness, iron, sediment, taste, odor, and other concerns may require different equipment. We recommend testing when appropriate and use those results along with your goals to help determine suitable treatment options.

Well Systems, Pumps & Water Protection

Q: Why is my well water pressure changing or dropping?

A: Changes in well-water pressure can involve the pressure tank, pressure switch, pump, clogged filter, plumbing leak, or another system condition. Some variation is normal, but worsening or frequent pressure problems should be evaluated. We inspect accessible well-system components and recommend the appropriate repair.

Q: Why is my well pump turning on and off so frequently?

A: Frequent pump cycling can be caused by a pressure tank problem, incorrect tank air charge, faulty pressure controls, plumbing leak, or another well-system condition. Repeated short cycling can increase wear on pump equipment. We can evaluate the pressure tank, switch, pump operation, and related plumbing to find the cause.

Q: Do you repair and replace well pumps and irrigation pumps?

A: Yes. Hoppers Plumbing provides troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of well pumps and irrigation pumps, along with related controls and plumbing connections. Our irrigation work is limited to irrigation pumps and associated pump components. We do not install or repair sprinkler systems or irrigation piping.

Q: What is the difference between a pressure tank and a water storage tank?

A: A pressure tank helps maintain water pressure and reduces how frequently a well pump must start and stop. A water storage tank holds a larger volume of water for later use. The two perform different jobs and may be used together depending on the well, water supply, household demand, and system design.

Q: How can an automatic water shutoff device help protect my home?

A: An automatic water shutoff device monitors the home's water system and, depending on the model, can identify unusual water use and automatically close the main water supply. These systems can provide additional protection against certain plumbing leaks, especially when a property is vacant or the homeowner is away.

Q: Does Hoppers Plumbing install or repair backflow preventers?

A: Hoppers Plumbing can repair and replace backflow prevention devices and related plumbing when appropriate. Backflow protection helps prevent unwanted reverse flow into the drinking-water system. We do not perform certified backflow testing, so required certification or annual testing must be completed by a qualified tester.
